2017, Ecole Louis Blanc 

En 2017, l'association des Anciens et Amis de la France Libre (Michel Pérot, Président et Florence Roumeguère, intervenante) a été invitée à présenter l'histoire de Jean Maridor aux jeunes élèves de Cm1-Cm2 de L'Ecole Louis Blanc du Havre.

Aout 2019 :  100e Anniversaire de l'aéroclub du Havre Jean Maridor.

En ouverture des cérémonies organisées par l'Aéroclub,  la Délégation 76 LH de la Fondation de la France Libre a co-organisé avec Monsieur Pierre Prigent, Directeur de l'Aéroclub, un hommage à la sépulture de Jean Maridor.  Cette cérmonie en présence des autorités civiles et militaires des  porte-drapeaux et de la famille Revet-Maridor, a donné lieu à des allocutions suivie de dépôts de gerbes.

Pierre Prigent a évoqué la biographie passionnée de notre jeune Pilote devant les cameramen de France 3 Normandie Baie de Seine. Richard Holme lui a succédé, heureux de partager avec nous quelques souvenirs de sa mère et de nous annoncer la cérémonie à l’Ecole de Benenden en Angleterre, en novembre 2019.

M Gastinne, Maire du Havre a tenu à saluer la mémoire de notre héros Havrais et à remercier M Pierre Prigent pour son initiative. Une dizaine de porte-drapeaux entouraient la tombe de “Mari”, dont Patrick Verneuil, porte-drapeau de notre Délégation. La tombe de Jean Maridor a été fleurie par M le Maire du Havre, Mme Firmin-Bodot, députée de Seine-Maritime, Mr Prigent, Mme Amiel et Richard Holme.

Après ce temps fort de la cérémonie, les présents se sont longuement attardés pour prendre des photographies du panneau présenté par notre Délégation, le temps également pour les journalistes de prolonger leurs prises de vue par des entretiens particuliers.

Michel Gouyer, collectionneur passionné de Jean Maridor,  s’était attaché le 3 aout, jour anniversaire de la mort du Pilote  à nettoyer  sa tombe et la fleurir,  comme il le fait chaque année…

Il y avait 5 ans qu’ils ne s’étaient pas retrouvés : les membres de la famille de Jean Maridor - M Fernand Revet, époux de Thérèse Maridor - soeur de Jean, son fils Michel, son petit-fils Auguste, et Richard le fils de Jean Holme née Lambourn.

Allocution de Richard Holme au cours de la cérémonie devant la sépulture de Jean Maridor  : “ I am very proud to have been invited here today by M Pierre Prigent of the Aeroclub Jean Maridor and warm greetings to all who are here saluting the sacrifice of Mari.

I never knew Mari of course but my mother Jean was due to be married to him eight days after his heroic death over Benenden School saving the lives of hundreds in the army hospital there and 60 or so school children.

My mother met him only four months before his death when 91 squadron moved to West Malling where she was based. Apart from being a top pilot, he was an excellent cook. They lived hard and played hard, my mother a quiet respectable woman remembers parties where they rode motor bikes on the dance floor and the best parties had the most broken glass on the floor!

91 squadron was reputed to have the best Spitfire pilots and Mari became well known for his hatred of the Germans and daring low level attacks particularly on shipping, he sank 29 ships as well as shooting down many planes and eleven flying bombs.

I am enjoying a short holiday here in your lovely country with my friends from Folkestone which was saved by 91 Squadron in 1943. Mari and another attacked 12 German bombers about to attack the town and with colleagues shot down five of them. He was presented with a magnum of wine but said he would not drink it till the Boche were defeated.

When I was young I enjoyed very much visiting France to stay with Mari’s sister Therese and her husband Fernand. I am very glad that their son Michel and his family are here today and I am sure we all send them our very best greetings to Fernand who cannot attend.

Sadly, Therese died in 2015, in the same week I think as my mother’s brother John Lambourn who met Mari and wrote several books on him and painted his Spitfire many times. I would like to present the Aeroclub with one of John’s paintings.

Benenden School today is arguably the best girls school in England and they remember Mari. They have a Maridor Room and a trophy, a lovely wooden Spitfire. In November they unveil a memorial to him at a special ceremony. I will attend with my sister Katie and she is very sorry she cannot be here today.

In 1994, a special event was held at Benenden to commemorate the 50th anniversary, my dear mother did a long speech in French and I am sorry my friends that I am not able to do this today. Thank you again for allowing me to speak”.

Journée Porte Ouvertes du 100e Anniversaire à l'Aéroclub du Havre Jean Maridor

Monsieur Pierre Prigent, Directeur de l'Aéroclub, a proposé au Havrais une Journée Porte Ouvertes présentant une exposition de Sébastien Bocé dédiée à l'histoire de l'Aéroclub et une cérémonie en présence de membres de la patouille de France au cours de laquelle fut remis aux élèves de l'Aéroclub le diplôme du Brevet d'initiation Aéronautique " Jean Maridor ".

3 aout 2018, visite de Richard Holme à l'Ecole de Benenden  :

« Je suis allé à l'école Benenden hier pour la première fois en 8 ans et j'ai présenté un tableau de John Lambourn aux deux représentants de l'école (photo 1). La peinture est celle du Spitfire de Maridor qui poursuit son dernier V1. Elle sera présentée  dans la salle Maridor où sont déjà exposées des photos de Jean et de ma mère ainsi que des parties du V1.

J'ai été très heureux d'apprendre que Maridor est bien connu et qu'ils ont un nouveau prix Maridor, un joli modèle en acajou de Spitfire. Comme vous le savez peut-être, la princesse Anne est allée à l’école de Benenden, la dernière école de filles au Royaume-Uni !  Richard Holme

L'Ecole de Benenden vient d'inaugurer son nouveau prix Jean Maridor remis aux élèves les plus méritants.

NOVEMBRE 2019 : BENENDEN SCHOOL INAUGURE UNE PLAQUE COMMEMORATIVE

L'Ecole de filles de Benenden a souhaité en novembre 2019 marquer la commémoration du  Remembrance Day en organisant une cérémonie en hommage au pilote de chasse Jean Maridor  qui s'est sacrifié voici 75 ans le 3 août 1944  pour sauver  l'école, alors transformée en hôpital, de l'attaque d'un V1. En présence de membres de la famille de Jean Lambourn, du Colonel Patrice Hugret, Attaché de l'Air français,  et du Capitaine Mark Foster qui représentait la Royal Air Force.

Pupils from Benenden School have held a special Remembrance Sunday service in honour of a French pilot who died while saving the school buildings from a doodlebug 75 years ago.

Dignitaries and relatives joined pupils and staff on Sunday (10 November) to pay tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by Capitaine Jean Maridor (Free French).

On 3 August 1944 Capt Maridor, a pilot with 91 Squadron RAF, died while successfully preventing a flying bomb from hitting its target: the buildings of Benenden School which at the time were being used as a wartime military hospital.

Flying over the coast at Rye, he spotted a V1 flying bomb and set about the chase in his Spitfire. He made repeated attempts to shoot it down but was unable to ground it. As it neared the school buildings, which at the time had a large red cross on the roof, he closed to within 50 metres and let off a final salvo. The resulting explosion destroyed the doodlebug but also tore off the Spitfire’s right wing, sending it plummeting to the ground.

Capt Maridor died in the crash. It was eight days before he was due to marry his fiancée, WAAF Section Office Jean Lambourn.

Among the guests to Benenden on Sunday were members of Jean Lambourn’s family as well as Colonel Patrice Hugret, the French Air Attaché, and Group Captain Mike Foster who was representing the Royal Air Force.

In the presence of staff, pupils and the School’s Combined Cadet Force, Katie Stewart, the daughter of Jean Lambourn, unveiled a plaque in memory of Cpt Maridor. Guests also had the opportunity to view some of the artefacts and archive material the school has on file about Capt Maridor.

Headmistress Samantha Price said: “As a school and as a wider community, we are forever grateful for the ultimate sacrifice paid by Capt Maridor. In this anniversary year, it was entirely fitting for us to come together on Remembrance Sunday to celebrate the life of Capt Maridor and his astonishing bravery which undoubtedly saved the lives of many.”

Mrs Stewart said : “It was a lovely tribute and a very moving service. I’m just so happy that the school keeps the memory alive, it’s such an important thing.”
